Celebrated at Joe Fiore’s Rockbear Underbear party, at Rockbar on Christopher Street on January 28, were: bear titleholders, like Mr. International Grizzly George Hains and reigning Mr. Metrobear Sunshine; hefty bears, like singer Blake Evan Sherman; musclebears, like hunky Scott; and ‘bear trappers,’ as fans of bears are called in New Orleans; Caucasian bears; African-American bears; and Asian-American bears; bear t-shirts and hoodies; bear cellphone apps; bears in their union suits; bears in their long johns; bears in their jockstraps; and bears with their furry bare chests; in short, bears, bears, bears, bears, bears! DJ Adam was responsible for the music.
The men of WoofTEASE embossed bear-relevant decals on t-shirts ($20) and hoodies ($30) on the spot, and helped promote SCRUFF cellphone apps, all designed to help bears find each other.
There was a bear underwear contest after midnight, with contenders Sunshine, from New Mexico, and New York bears Lamar, leatherman Raymond, and Bryant vying to be top bear. By audience acclaim, the winner was—woof!—Bryant.
