Imagine, if you will, "Sex in the City" meets "Desperate Housewives," written for TeleMundo and primarily populated by an artistic community of lesbians, and you'll have the saffron flavor of Sonia Sebastián's "Chica Busca Chica" (Girl Seeks Girl, Spain 2009, Part One: 82 minutes, Part Two: 72 minutes). Frothy and twisty and loads of fun, the Spanish television series' plot line presently revolves around roommates Carmen (Sandra Collantes) and Mónica (Cristina Pons). Carmen has picked up comic book artist and lesbian Lothario Nines (Celia Freijeiro), who has wangled an invitation to stay for a few days after being kicked out by her now-ex lover. Ana (Almudena Gallego) is moving in to be Carmen's new roomie, when Mónica realizes that her boyfriend is unfaithful. The merriment ensues.
Now with English subtitles, this fun and sexy comedy is a great way to hone your Spanish. Carmen is a writer and former Olympic Judo champion, and all the women will encourage you to include Spain in your travel plans. Take a date to the showing of Parts One, consisting of episodes one to nine, and Two, episodes 10 to 16, and dessert will be too hot to handle!
Philadelphia's QFest (www.phillycinema.org), the gay and lesbian film festival, hosts the East Coast premiere of "Chica Busca Chica" on July 15 at 7:15 p.m. (Part One) and 16 at 7:15 p.m. (Part Two) at the Ritz East, Theater Two, 125 South Second Street.
