World AIDS Day is commemorated on December 1 every year around the world, as it has been since December 1, 1990. Formerly, only very large cities would have ceremonies to mark this day, but this year, people in Wilton Manors, Florida, had their very first community candlelight walk and vigil.
Dedicated to those fighting HIV and AIDS, and remembering those loved ones who have passed, the walk stepped off from historic Richardson Park in the heart of Wilton Manors. The walk proceeded from there to the parking lot immediately adjacent to Georgie's Alibi bar and restaurant where there was a small canopy set up.

The rally near Georgie's was not only to remember those who have passed. The theme of "Our Memories Burn Bright" was two-fold, not only bringing to mind our past friends, but also our dear survivors, as well as looking toward the future to a time when we defeat the plague that has taken so many.
The South Florida Lambda Chorale is directed by Gary Keating, who founded the organization in 1991 and, as part of the rally, he led an ensemble of the chorus in a moving rendition of "Let Me Be the Music," which reminded us we are all part of one another. I had the honor to perform with the Chorale and to blend my voice with others who, like me, celebrate our survivors while we cherish the memory of our loved ones who have passed on.
